New this year is the Building Brighter Futures Fund Scholarship. Created in honor of Kellie Stallings, who served as executive director of Connections Individual and Family Services for more than 25 years, the fund was established to honor Kellie’s legacy in the community and give hope to those who have faced adversity in their lives.

“The fund is designed to give back to those who have had to overcome obstacles and need that little extra help to succeed,” said Jacob Huereca, chief executive officer at Connections Individual and Family Services. “Kellie has always believed in helping, and this fund is her lasting legacy to continue that effort by developing future generations.”

In addition, the GVTC Foundation will once again be offering two large scholarships, at $20,000 each – the Ola Armstrong Scholarship for community service and the Ritchie T. Sorrells Scholarship for Leaders. A third scholarship, the GVTC Technical/Vocational Scholarship for $5,000 will be open to applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to continuing their education in pursuit of a degree or certification in a vocational or technical field.

In addition to the GVTC Technical/Vocational Scholarship, the New Braunfels Area Car Club Scholarship is open to those who are studying for a career related to the automotive industry.

“My goal is to be able to pay without resorting to loans, and this money will go far to help me reach it,” said Ben Viego, a recipient of the 2020 New Braunfels Area Car Club Scholarship who is currently attending the University of Dallas at Irving.

Cos said the scholarship puts her one step closer to her greatest goals of pursuing a career in psychology with the long-term goal of becoming a psychiatrist.

Andrew Johnson, recipient of the 2020 WGL Jr Scholarship, is a student at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
