The Will Brunson Memorial Scholarship has been established to assist graduating student athletes from New Braunfels High School who are continuing their education while playing a sport at a two or four-year institution. Applicants should demonstrate dedication, teamwork, participation in social and civic endeavors, and a strong work ethic.
Will Brunson of New Braunfels, TX passed away November 23, 2019, from a heart attack while hiking in Big Bend National Park with friends. Both of Will’s children, Travis and Ella, attended New Braunfels High School and played sports. At the time of his passing, Will was the South Texas Regional Scout for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Will grew up in Desoto, TX, playing baseball and basketball. After high school, he played baseball for Eastfield Junior College and Southwest Texas State (Texas State) where he met his wife Dana Huneycutt. Will played many years of minor league baseball with the Reds, Dodgers, Tigers, A’s, and Angels and also spent some time in the Big Leagues with the Dodgers and Tigers.
Will enjoyed coaching youth baseball, hunting, fishing, golf, and camping. His most fulfilling past-time was seeing kids succeed in athletics and being the Number One fan of Dana, Travis, and Ella. Will was a friend to many and enriched the lives of everyone he met.
The 2023 Will Brunson Scholarship is open to students who:

- Are graduating seniors at NBHS;
- Are graduating in the top half of their class;
- Are male or female athletes who have lettered in a sport while at New Braunfels High School;
- Will be attending a 2 or 4-year college or university and playing a sport;
- Participate in social or civic endeavors;
- Demonstrate dedication, teamwork and a strong work ethic;
- Are permanent residents within NBISD attendance boundaries.
